Video: I feel dirty: confessions of a first-time snowmobiler
The rental skis had been returned and we had half a day to kill before leaving Crested Butte. The one petrolhead (ex-motocross racer) in the party had scoped out snowmobiling, convincing us all to have a go before we hopped on the bus to the airport mid-afternoon.
We booked through Action Adventures based at the Avalanche Bar in the base area. And I think we did the Burt’s Rentals “Top Of The Rockies Tour” which is by far Crested Buttes’ most popular snowmobile excursion. Permitted by the US Forest Service for over 30 years in this location, Burt’s Rentals is the only snowmobile tour company allowed to operate in the Irwin Lake area of the Gunnison National Forest. We enjoyed spectacular mountain scenery of the Ruby Range, saw the frozen Lake Irwin and the world famous Irwin Lodge and their SnoCat Ski Terrain – and tore up a pristine snow-cover meadow (snow only not the ground underneath I hasten to add…).
Each snowmobile had one adult and one child and all had a blast. Wrap up warm, it gets chilly!
