Crested Butte Launches New Adventure Guide Program
Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) and Crested Butte Mountain Guides have created a new “Adventure Guide Program” that combines backcountry ski skills and education with guided in-bounds and out-of-bounds skiing. The new ski school offering addresses the need for skier skills and education for guests wanting a different ski experience in Crested Butte. As backcountry skiing continues to grow, CBMR wants guests to have the best instruction and most of all, a unique Colorado ski experience.
“With PSIA/AMGA Certified Guides running the program, the amazing terrain Crested Butte has to offer, and keeping it fun for the guest, this is the perfect addition to our programs,” says Nick Herrin, Ski and Ride School Director for CBMR. “Experienced guides will evaluate needs and ability to create a mountain experience guests will never forget. By getting them to explore the North Face or some of the hidden powder patches on the lower mountain, it’s guaranteed fun.” A partnership with Crested Butte Mountain Guides puts CBMR at the forefront of ski resorts offering this type of program.
“We are excited to be able to provide education, input, and an amazing experience for people wanting to try backcountry skiing in a safe, professional way,” comments Jayson Simons-Jones, owner and Lead Guide with Crested Butte Mountain Guides. “Helping clients get into the backcountry, or even just trying something new on skis, is important and fun.”
In taking the opportunity to learn more about backcountry skiing and safety, guests will be supplied for the day with an Osprey backpack and other necessities needed for hiking and exploring the mountain. Backcountry Access Tracker transceivers, probes, and shovels are also available for guests interested in learning how to use the gear.
Some specific categories and costs are an All Day Guide ($610), Morning Guide ($400), and Afternoon Guide ($380), which are ideal for those trying to get a sense of in-bounds exploration at Crested Butte. The best program for a true immersion into backcountry skiing is the CB Backcountry Guide 2 Day Program ($1070). This program does require intermediate or above skiing ability. It also includes lift tickets and all the equipment needed for safe backcountry travel.
“The Backcountry Guide offering is for people looking for an adventure outside the ski area,” adds Herrin. “The first day will be spent on the mountain learning backcountry skills and equipment usage, such as skinning, transceiver practice, and safety procedures. The second day will be an adventure exploring the backcountry terrain and pristine powder in the area that Crested Butte Mountain Guides are permitted.”
Simons-Jones adds, “It is a unique learning opportunity to follow our guides on a beautiful and serene climb through low-angle aspen and pine forests. Then, at the top, we head down through deep Colorado powder. Just awesome.”
