Neat little video that takes a behind the scenes look at the snow making team in Crested Butte. Snow making is a vital part of prepping the mountain for the season and the crew can be seen at work many weeks after opening day boosting and buffing the snow all over the place – and working in pretty hard conditions!: (more…)
After a winter storm moved into the Crested Butte area over the weekend, Crested Butte Mountain Resort’s PowCam is showing 5 inches this morning (and it’s cleared every day).
Crested Butte’s lifts open in 10 days on November 21st – time to get stoked about the season!

Great atmosphere in Mount Crested Butte for the finish of stage 2 of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge. Re-live the exciting finish which saw Tejay Van Garderen (BMC), followed by Christian Vande Velde (Garmin-Sharp-Barracuda), come from nowhere to snatch victory from BMC team-mate Mathias Frank with 600m to go to the summit finish!
The Chainless World Championships (CWC), take place in Crested Butte today (Friday, June 24) . Though Crested Butte has held a chainless race in years past, this is only the second incarnation as a world championship race.
The race kicks off with a mass LeMans start at 4:00P.M. from the top of Kebler Pass and then heads down 7 miles of dirt and pavement to the heart of town.
For race updates and general shenanigans, be sure to check out the event’s Facebook page.
The CWC is part of the 31st annual Crested Butte Bike Week which started yesterday with Alison Gannett’s Rippin’ Chix Mountain Bike Camps for women and a “Night at the Museum” kick-off party at the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame, 331 Elk Avenue.
Formerly Fat Tire Bike Week, the new name for this popular cycling week is “Michelob Ultra Crested Butte Bike Week”. The Mountain States Cup Wildflower Rush runs through Sunday, and the Bridges of the Butte 24-Hour Townie Tour starts on Saturday.
Fun run for the kids in the trees off Houston before you reach the base area. Very narrow so tricky, but fun, for adults to follow in too:
The rental skis had been returned and we had half a day to kill before leaving Crested Butte. The one petrolhead (ex-motocross racer) in the party had scoped out snowmobiling, convincing us all to have a go before we hopped on the bus to the airport mid-afternoon.
Butt skiing. I used this technique a lot on February's ski trip. It's encouraged by the rental shops as it reduces the wear and tear on the skis. This particular example takes place near the top of International:
We'll have more videos of the runs to follow but viewer discretion is advised. The "videographer" was only on his third ski trip and so many, many skiers will be offended by his technique and complete lack of prowess – particularly when he has a go at his first double black diamond…
Shot using a V.I.O. POV.1.5 – not that they'll be pleased to hear that…
It may not be Crested Butte but this promo video by Telluride makes you want to hit the slopes fast, particularly when you’re in the grip of a hot, hazy and humid Caribbean summer:
Shot and edited in the winter of 2009 in collaboration with the Telluride Visitors Center, Telluride Mountain Village Owners Association, Telluride Ski Resort and Telluride Mountainfilm in hopes of giving viewers a soulful, non-commercial look at the winter experience in Telluride. Technically, we did go cat-skiing in Crested Butte. We got in a “toast rack” behind a snowcat, were taken up a portion of a mountain and, eventually, skied back down the mountain. Admittedly, we were taken up a green run (Painter Boy) to get to some blue runs – after a nice warm cup of Joe at Camp4Coffee…
The snowcat ride had been kindly laid on by Crested Butte Mountain Resort while they fixed Painter Boy Lift. We were second or third day into our trip and weren’t heading higher in that weather…
